April 4, 2021 - part 1: 4/3/21 Countdown/By the Numbers
Sunday Apr 04, 2021
Sunday Apr 04, 2021
Episode #883
This show was recorded on 4/3/21, and hopefully it's not the Final Countdown, but it did inspire two hours of countdowns, count-ins, and a whole lot of numbers!
This show is a little different than your usual Sunday afternoon singer/songwriter fare, with a bit wider scope and some artists and songs we don't normally play on the show. It's fun to loosen things up and have a little fun once in a while.

Well, it's beginning to look a lot like Spring, and I couldn't be more thrilled! A bunch of timely songs in honour of the season is definitely warranted, plus some new music, German requests, and a bit of St. Patrick's Day music (with or without a Celtic edge to it), even if I don't know when the actual day is. Oh well, the music is great nonetheless!

This past week on Fly with your Shadow, I had the chance to speak with Joey Serlin of The Watchmen, who's preparing for the release of a new album featuring Watchmen singer Danny Greaves, under the name Serlin Greaves. We'll hear more about that project and hear their brand new single today, alongside other great new music. We also say goodbye to The Bottle Rockets and celebrate a few notable birthdays!

It is Valentine's Day, and although that goofy greeting card holiday doesn't really excite me, it is also the time when we celebrate the life and music of the great Willie P Bennett, who died on February 15, 2008. This year there's a whole crop of great new cover versions that you can (and should) check out on YouTube, and we've got a few of my favourites on the show today as well as a bunch of great new music, German requests, and a tip of the hat to our friends at CKUW 95.9 fm, who are in the midst of their annual FunDrive. I support the cause every single year, and I hope that you will too! Go to ckuw.ca/donate to show your support!

Episode #872
Not a lot of new music these days, leaving time to celebrate two beloved Canadian musical institutions. Borealis Records has served the Canadian folk & roots community like no other label over the past 25 years, so it's with a bit of sadness but a lot of gratitude that we pay tribute to the end of the road for founders Grit Laskin and Bill Garrett. Winnipeg's beloved Times Change(d) High & Lonesome Club is one of the most important musical breeding grounds in the country (world?) and it celebrates 20 years this week. John Scoles has stared down the end of the road and refused to quit many times and we're looking forward to the eventual post-COVID resurrection of the club with a look back at some of the amazing moments from the past 20 years.

Back in the saddle for the first "regular" episode of the new year. After a couple of 4-hour specials the past couple of weeks and a bunch of Christmas business before that, we've got a bit of a backlog of new and new-to-me music to get through, as well as some requests and a trip back in time to some Can-con glory days spearheaded by one of our most loyal listeners.
