July 28, 2024 part 1: One Offs & Wonders

Episode #1048
Pre-recorded today because we still can't access the studio due to work going on at the university. Pre-recorded episodes sometimes allow me to explore a theme that I've been thinking about and spin some artists and songs that you don't normally hear on the show. Today's show contains a lot of stuff outside of the usual folky singer/songwriter fare. I'm pretty sure that some of you will hate some of it, but I bet if you give it a chance, you might just hear something you adore.
Today's show is an exploration of one offs and one hit wonders. These aren't your typical one hit wonders, these are either bands & artists that only released one project or an album or song that stands out in a band/artist's catalogue as being a bigger "hit" than the rest. It's very subjective and totally for fun and in no way meant as any kind of an insult to any of the bands/artists! After all, as the opening number tells us, one hit wonders have achieved something that very few do! These aren't major hits destined for hits compilations, they're beloved favourites that I enjoy revisiting over and over again. I hope that you will too!

Episode #1047
Another incredible Static Roots Festival has come and gone and once again, it was an amazing weekend of peace, love, and rock 'n' roll! There were so many highlights this year, and so many new artists and bits of information to learn about. Today's show is kind of debrief, with highlights, memories, and a lot of musical tangents to explore. This one is a little different than your usual singer/songwriter fare, but Static Roots and Tell the Band to Go Home are all about diverse music and ideas, so hopefully you'll enjoy my indulgence. Static Roots returns in Oberahausen, Germany, on July 11-12, 2025. I'll be there!

It's time once again to play Namedropper, where each and every song is either about another song or songwriter, or mentions one or more of them! See if you can keep score at home and pick out all of the mentions; there’s a lot of them!
This show is a continuation of a theme I started in 2018. If you missed that first episode, revisit it HERE
Even after 5 hours of these so far, I've got a whole pile more, so I'll surely revisit this topic again in the future, so if you’ve got other suggestions, let me know!

Summer is finally here, and that means it's time for some amazing music festivals. Today's show is a preview of the two that I'm most excited about and that I recommend the most. First up is an artist-by-artist preview of the brilliant Static Roots Festival in Oberhausen, Germany. I'm joined by my dear friend and festival director Dietmar Leibecke to talk about the amazing music, atmosphere, and some of the ways that this festival spreads peace, love, and rock 'n' roll all year long, around the world! Check out the festival here: staticrootsfestival.com and help out the amazing work done by Doctors without Borders here: action.msf.ca
In hour 3, a leftover from a recent Fly with your Shadow episode, where I spoke with Evangeline Gentle about the experience of playing at Static Roots twice and let her in on what to expect as she heads to Trout Forest Music Festival for the first time. She'll also be making a stop in Winnipeg on her way (DETAILS). We'll hear music from just some of the amazing artists that festival director Devin Latimer has booked this year! Check out that festival and get your tickets here: troutfest.com

The annual feature of all-Canadian music returns, with an extension of last year's fine playlist of All-Canadian Bangers, I had absolutely no trouble finding three more hours' worth, with no real repeat artists from last year! Three hours of great Canadian music, all killer, no filler. Turn this one up!

Episode #1036
This week is UMFM's Pledge-O-Rama, where you have the opportunity to let us know that you're listening and that you appreciate what we do. Every pledge, large or small, helps the station and lets us know that what we're doing matters to you.
You can find more details on our Music Angels page
or make your donation directly to UMFM: https://umfm.com/donate/pledgeorama
Joining us once again was the wonderful Keri Latimer, who called in to talk about the stellar new album from Leaf Rapids and to show her support for campus & community radio.
Later in the show, and for a special bonus hour, I was joined by John Prentice, host of Planet Mainstage on UMFM. We wanted to express our love & gratitude for our dearly departed Gail Comfort of the Comfort Cafe, and to play an hour of music with a Celtic edge to it, in honour of longtime UMFM mainstay, Lyle Skinner & Waxies Dargle. Lyle has been a dedicated host on UMFM since the beginning, and recently decided to wrap up his show. We felt it only fitting to encourage some pledges in his name. Thanks Lyle!

Episode #1025
This one is kind of "inspired" (stolen) from a post that Leeroy Stagger made on Facebook a while ago, asking for recommendations for "perfect albums front to back."
Most of my very favourite albums, and the majority of the albums that I listen to, seem to have at least one track that I, personally, could do without. When I'm listening to certain records, I know exactly which track(s) I'm going to skip. I've made playlists where I've "fixed" albums by removing a track or two. I guess I'm kind of hard to please. But every once in a while, I encounter an album where every track works and I wouldn't dare skip any of them. It's harder than you might think to find an album with no weak spots. I can immediately think of a few, but I can think of WAY more where there's one or two tracks that I don't love as much as the rest.
With that in mind, I did a deep dive into my collection looking for albums where I don't think there's a weak track. Because it's difficult and my collection is kind of diverse, I couldn't limit it just to the standard singer/songwriter fare, so you'll hear a few things on this show that you wouldn't hear otherwise on the program.
I didn't have time to relisten to them all, so I can't guarantee that every album played or mentioned in these three hours is perfect, but I can definitely guarantee that diving into any of these albums will be worth your time and very rewarding!
And because this show was pre-recorded and I put a lot of thought into it, I'm calling it one of the occasional "standby" episodes of the show that I might pull out again some day when I can't make it down to the station.
I sure hope you enjoy this one almost as much as I enjoyed putting it together. If not, I'm sure I'll be hearing from a few people wondering what the heck I'm doing playing some of this stuff.
