Last night I witnessed a really fun and memorable evening of songs about love. It was full of many great original songs, but also a whole bunch of terrific covers. Today we go through the highlight reel and hear a bunch of the original versions of songs that were performed there. Also, we've got some requests, great new music, and an exciting upcoming show to preview!
This is the one where we play some new music, get a little bit political, and then try really hard to feel better about the mess that our world has become, and somehow, come out feeling a whole lot better!
This weekend yet another amazing musician took up residence in the rock 'n' roll graveyard when the amazing Sharon Jones lost her long battle with cancer. Hey, 2016, ENOUGH ALREADY! Luckily, we've got some great new music, a couple of requests, and some exciting upcoming shows to preview. And to promote one of the most interesting shows, one of the couples involved with next weekend's "An Evening with the Bickersons," newlyweds Jessee Havey and Nathaniel Good, now known as Nation of Two, stopped by to chat about it, their recent wedding, and to perform live on-air for the very first time anywhere!
Any self-respecting singer/songwriter show had better take note of the passing of one of the true giants of songwriting, so much of today's show is devoted to the passing of Leonard Cohen and his lasting legacy. But he's not the only one, as we had to pay our respects to the late Leon Russell, as well. But, dwelling on deaths isn't all we do here, so we threw a 70th birthday party for Ray Wylie Hubbard, talked about a wortwhile fundraiser going on soon, and played some great new music!
The world is a messed up, confusing place. Luckily, John Prine knows all the answers. We hear some truth from John tonight. And in an effort to mend the soon-to-be-strained relationship with our neighbours to the South, we present a little Manitoba/Minnesota exchange, where we share some great music from each place. Lastly, we finish off with some exciting concert previews, because everything seems a little more bearable with live music.
A slightly abbreviated episode, but one that is jam-packed with memories of concerts past and visions of concerts future, including a conversation with Tony Furtado, who makes a rare Winnipeg appearance on November 11!
It's the day before Halloween and episode #666, so there's plenty of evil in the air! The only way to navigate through an episode of evil is to have a qualified guide, so the legendary Count Backwardsfromten is along to co-host and share some spooky tunes!
We’ve got some mighty exciting upcoming concerts to preview tonight, before jumping into a special birthday party, in honour of the late, great Willie P Bennett, who would have turned 65 yesterday!
Last week's Pledge-O-Rama was hugely successful and oh-so rewarding once again! Thanks to everyone who showed their support and helped us to keep going. It's a huge morale boost, as well, as I'm honoured and humbled by the kind people who continue to support my shows. Today's show is largely devoted to thanking those supporters in song, with some very special requests & dedications. Unfortunately, we still couldn't fit them all in, so there will be more to come! We just had to spin some great new music and some exciting upcoming shows. Thanks again!
If you didn't get a chance to pledge, it's never too late! Donate now!
UMFM’s Pledge-O-Rama is almost over for another year, but on this final full day of action, we need to pull out all the stops in an effort to help the station make its goal! On tonight’s show, you’ll hear plenty shameless pitches designed to bring in your pledge, as well as plenty of exciting reasons why you should!
UMFM’s annual Pledge-O-Rama is here! This is the time of year when we appeal to you, the listener, to help us keep alive and get better at what we do. We need your help to pay the bills and help us with special projects, like this year’s goal of enough money to buy a new transmitter for the station! But it’s not just all about the money, we’ve got prizes and incentives to give away, requests/dedications for our supporters, and a very special live guest, Jaxon Haldane, who dropped by to chat and play some songs!
