It's Grey Cup Sunday in Winnipeg, so I want to nowhere near that goofy stadium, so a pre-recorded episode is in order. Recording in my basement allows me to go through the shelves of CDs that don't make it down to the station as often and pull out some gems. We dug pretty deep this week, and came up with some really great ones.
Tonight some big, dumb, rock & roll to start things off before rolling into a classic country set in honour of the upcoming Merle Haggard tribute show at Times Change(d) and a heck of a bargain on some classic George Jones.
Today we congratulate our pal Leeroy Stagger on a big win last night in the Peak Performance contest, kudos to those folks for figuring out what we’ve known for over a decade – Leeroy rocks! We also have to show some more love and appreciation for the amazing songs of Ron Hynes with some of his best as well as some great co-writes. He will be missed, but never forgotten!
Just after the beginning of this show, the sad news arrived that one of Canada’s finest songwriters had died. All that could be done from there was to stop what we were doing and play a whole pile of amazing songs from this Canadian legend. He may be gone, but his songs will never be forgotten.
After the madness and sadness of this weekend, only music can soothe our souls, so we’ve got a great lineup of peaceful songs to get things going. Hour 2 is exclusively dedicated to exciting upcoming shows in town, because there are so many these days!
Tonight we’ve got a special cultural exchange segment in conjunction with the fine folks at 89.3 The Current fm in Minneapolis where we share some local artists from here and there. We’ve also got a look ahead to a very busy weekend of concerts in Winnipeg and more!
Today a fine mix of great new music and exciting upcoming shows, as well as some requests and a tribute to legendary Canadian songwriter Ron Hynes who recently revealed yet another battle with cancer; let’s hope he beats it once again.
